Prologue: Chara returns home from a concert at her friends house, she sneaks in to the window and comes out to the kitchen for something to drink. Her father begins to abuse her and it is described poetically, things that happen are replaced with analogies. He's going too far, her mother and brother arrive at the house, they witness the scene, the brother pulls the father off, but it takes the mother also to restrain him, Chara is bleeding from the head, the glass has been crushed into her face and her arms, she crawls and struggles back to her room, the screams as she hears her brother fighting off her father, she takes what she can and climbs out the window, and runs the reader is left with her closing monologue, "Keep going. There's only death back there. Keep going. Keep breathing. I don't want to die here. I want to die some place beautiful." In the beginning: Chara is in the hospital, she wonders about the scars on her arms, we learn that she's gro...
